This project is a renovation proposal that transforms Artist’s House, located in Marronnier Park in Daehak-ro, into an open architectural culture space for the public. Although architecture is closely connected to everyday life, it is still often perceived as a difficult and unfamiliar field. This project aims to reduce the distance between architecture and the public by reinterpreting an authoritative and closed existing building as an everyday space where anyone can walk, observe, and experience architecture.
The existing Artist’s House has historical value, but its elevated entrance, opaque façade, and rigid corridor-centered floor plan prevent it from actively engaging with the surrounding public flow. Although it is located at the center of Daehak-ro, where parks and cultural facilities are concentrated, the building remains disconnected from the city due to roads, fences, and trees that limit physical and visual access. Therefore, this project does not simply preserve the building, but seeks to make it function again within the current urban context.
The main design strategy is the transformation from “concealing architecture” to “revealing architecture.” While preserving the historical façade of the existing building, the project empties its closed interior structure and inserts new circulation paths and masses, allowing visitors to naturally pass through and stay within the building. The newly opened pedestrian route turns the building from a fixed destination into part of an urban walk, while the transparent façade reveals the exhibitions and activities inside, encouraging curiosity and participation from the public.
In particular, the atrium created by emptying the former office space becomes the central space of the project. Here, architectural elements are displayed at actual scale rather than as reduced models, allowing visitors to understand architecture through physical experience rather than abstract knowledge. The programs, including exhibitions, a library, a children’s library, a café, archives, and offices, expand architecture into both a professional field of documentation and a public cultural experience. Through this transformation, Artist’s House moves away from being a formal and authoritative architectural space and becomes an open architectural walk where citizens can encounter and understand architecture in everyday life.
이 프로젝트는 대학로 마로니에 공원에 위치한 예술가의 집을 시민을 위한 열린 건축문화공간으로 전환하는 리노베이션 프로젝트이다. 건축은 일상과 밀접하게 연결되어 있음에도 불구하고 여전히 많은 사람들에게 어렵고 낯선 영역으로 인식된다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 건축과 대중 사이의 거리를 줄이기 위해, 기존의 권위적이고 폐쇄적인 건축물을 누구나 걷고, 보고, 경험할 수 있는 일상적 공간으로 재해석하고자 했다.
기존 예술가의 집은 역사적 가치를 지닌 건물이지만, 높은 진입부와 불투명한 입면, 복도 중심의 엄격한 평면 구조로 인해 주변의 공공적 흐름과 적극적으로 관계 맺지 못하고 있었다. 또한 공원과 문화시설이 밀집한 대학로의 중심에 위치하면서도, 도로와 담장, 수목 등에 의해 접근이 제한되어 도시와 단절된 상태로 존재하고 있었다. 이에 본 프로젝트는 건물을 단순히 보존하는 것이 아니라, 현재의 도시 활동 안에서 다시 작동하게 만드는 것을 목표로 했다.
설계의 핵심은 ‘감추는 건축’에서 ‘드러내는 건축’으로의 전환이다. 기존 건물의 역사적 파사드는 보존하되, 내부의 폐쇄적인 구조를 비우고 새로운 동선과 매스를 삽입하여 시민이 자연스럽게 건물을 통과하고 머무를 수 있도록 했다. 새롭게 열린 보행 루트는 건물을 목적지가 아닌 도시 산책의 일부로 만들며, 투명한 입면은 내부의 전시와 활동을 외부로 드러내어 사람들의 호기심과 참여를 유도한다.
특히 기존 사무공간을 비워 만든 아트리움은 프로젝트의 중심 공간이다. 이곳에서는 건축 요소를 축소된 모형이 아닌 실제 스케일로 전시하여, 방문자가 건축을 지식이 아니라 신체적 경험으로 이해할 수 있도록 했다. 전시, 라이브러리, 키즈 라이브러리, 카페, 아카이브, 오피스 등으로 구성된 프로그램은 건축을 전문적인 기록의 대상이자 대중적인 문화 경험으로 확장한다. 이를 통해 예술가의 집은 형식적이고 권위적인 건축 공간에서 벗어나, 시민이 일상 속에서 건축을 만나고 이해하는 열린 건축 산책로가 된다.
